Personal

This is a little more personal than I like to get on my blog, but I feel compelled to say something.

In today’s AJC (local paper) there’s an article stating that legislation is being considered that will limit the number of eggs that can be fertilized during In-Vitro Fertilization procedures. State legislators think this decision is better made by the state than by doctors and patients.

For those who don’t know, Ava was conceived via IVF. After 4 years of trying to conceive, tests, treatments, no answers and no success, we gave it ONE try. IVF is crazy expensive. Major life decision expensive. "Do we really need a retirement fund?" expensive. And insurance doesn’t cover it.

So we gave ourselves ONE try. One try to give Aidan a baby brother or sister.

We ended up with 7 eggs retrieved. 5 were mature and 4 were fertilized. 3 transferred. One sweet baby girl.

My intent here isn’t a political debate, just to put a ‘face’ on it. The articles in the paper are always so sterile (no pun intended). They tend to focus on the medical side of things, rather than the human, in my opinion.

That said…If there’d been a limit on fertilization – say 3 eggs instead of all 4 – we might have missed the one that gave us her.
