So back in the day (as in before kids…before business…when I worked full time with a husband who travelled 90% of the time and I actually had TIME for such things…) I was a bit of a Martha fanatic. A bit (Vic is going to laugh if he reads this).
But the shine wore off over the years, when (much like Aidan discovering there really isn’t a tooth fairy, which he hasn’t actually done yet, but he will…someday) I figured out that maybe - just maybe - Martha didn’t actually DO all of the things in her magazine herself. I mean - seriously - groom the dogs, plant a harvest, pick a crop, polish the silver, make custom placemats and decorations, AND prepare a 5-course feast for 20 people? What was I thinking?
Then a couple of years ago I subscribed to her new Blueprint magazine, primarily because I loved the title font. Who doesn’t love Fling, right? Then I discovered the magazine was directed towards 20-something new home owners. Oops. Don’t really fit that bill, I guess.
But then the magazine closed shop, and the remainder of my subscription is being filled with beautiful issues of Martha Stewart Living - so I can once again be hoodwinked into thinking Martha really does do it all. Maybe.
Anyway, I digress. In the latest issue, I saw this gorgeous bit of loveliness:

I do love pretty pictures all lined up. And imagine walking in the back door…the front door…down your upstairs hallway…and having this gallery there.
I design quite a few asymmetrical wall galleries for my clients. I love them a) because it makes it easy to mix and match pictures and b) it’s easy to start small and add on with future sessions.
And because there does lurk a wee bit of Martha inside of me…here’s my take on it:

That’s just a doorway and an 8′ length of wall space. A few 16×20s, 11×14s, 8×10s and 5×7s.
And you could just start with this:

And add on later. That’s why I love asymmetrical galleries. And Martha.
Carry on!
