The question I’m always asked before a family session is “What should we wear?” And it’s a good question! My advice is always: 1. Avoid white. It’s just glaringly bright in black and white…and in color it tends to reflect the landscape color (green, blue, brown, etc.) 2. Avoid bold logos that will ‘date’ the images. 3. Avoid really bold patterns for family shots – for individuals of the kids? GREAT! Show off their personality and style for sure – but keep things cohesive for the family shots. 4. Consider what everyone is wearing ‘one big outfit.’ You want to coordinate, but you don’t want to match exactly. Everyone wearing the same thing equals a *really* boring portrait.
Some photographer friends and I have started to put together wardrobe ideas – I’m focusing on family groups since I have quite a few of those coming up this summer. Here are some suggestions:

As you can see, these all go well together, but they don’t match exactly. Jeans, blues, browns, greens, and khaki all photograph beautifully.
