So back in the day (as in before kids…before business…when I worked full time with a husband who travelled 90% of the time and I actually had TIME for such things…) I was a bit of a Martha fanatic. A bit (Vic is going to laugh if he reads this).
But the shine wore off over the years, when (much like Aidan discovering there really isn’t a tooth fairy, which he hasn’t actually done yet, but he will…someday) I figured out that maybe - just maybe - Martha didn’t actually DO all of the things in her magazine herself. I mean - seriously - groom the dogs, plant a harvest, pick a crop, polish the silver, make custom placemats and decorations, AND prepare a 5-course feast for 20 people? What was I thinking?
Then a couple of years ago I subscribed to her new Blueprint magazine, primarily because I loved the title font. Who doesn’t love Fling, right? Then I discovered the magazine was directed towards 20-something new home owners. Oops. Don’t really fit that bill, I guess.
But then the magazine closed shop, and the remainder of my subscription is being filled with beautiful issues of Martha Stewart Living - so I can once again be hoodwinked into thinking Martha really does do it all. Maybe.
Anyway, I digress. In the latest issue, I saw this gorgeous bit of loveliness:

I do love pretty pictures all lined up. And imagine walking in the back door…the front door…down your upstairs hallway…and having this gallery there.
I design quite a few asymmetrical wall galleries for my clients. I love them a) because it makes it easy to mix and match pictures and b) it’s easy to start small and add on with future sessions.
And because there does lurk a wee bit of Martha inside of me…here’s my take on it:

That’s just a doorway and an 8′ length of wall space. A few 16×20s, 11×14s, 8×10s and 5×7s.
And you could just start with this:

And add on later. That’s why I love asymmetrical galleries. And Martha.
Carry on!

I loved that gallery in the magazine too Lisa! Great interpretation of it for a wall gallery.
This is AWESOME, Lisa! I love the idea and I love the way you have it laid out to add to later. Well done!!
Lisa - I totally appreciate you sharing this! Love it!
I have been seriously contemplating what to do in my hallway. This is perfect! So thanks for being inspired by Martha because it sure helped me!
I have loads of photos in frames up and down my hallway but I’ve discovered I hate the way they look because they seem to just been thrown up there. I think I’m going to have to steal your layout. Hmmm that means buying new frames too. Thanks
ROCK on Martha! LOVE this Lisa!!!!!
this is SO eyecatching, i love it. i want to create a gallery going up my stairs but not sure if this will work on that angle. i love that straight center line though. i must find somewhere to do this if not there
Yes! I loved that gallery too when I saw it!
I love this method of hanging photos. Leave it to Martha. In fact, I’m working on organizing candles with inspiration from Martha. Yes, that is what my life has come to, organizing candles.
Lisa I thought Martha must have some sort of superwomen too, but when I started to read her blog I discovered the huge amount of staff she has working for her, mind you she is obviously clever, but then so are you, I like your take on the photo wall.
You really have a great eye for groupings!!!
I do not at all…So I appreciate it when you share these examples!
Thanks so much!
These are cool! Thanks~!
And check out my blog — nominated you for one of my fave blogs!
I bought that issue, just because of the photo wall. My long hallway is one giant photo wall and I have been wanting to “weed” it down and go with all one style frame. The magazine and your wall LO’s are what I have been looking to do! TFS
I never really thoght Martha did it all herself, but she is good at hiring the right talent!
