That squeal of glee you heard emanating from Woodstock at approx. 10:45 a.m.? Yeah, that was me.

So any photographer will tell you – when we’re not shooting, our eye is constantly roving for things to incorporate into shoots. Bowls, baskets, blankets…

My style isn’t very ‘prop-heavy,’ but I do like to use specific pieces – baskets and bowls for my newborns, bigger baskets and stools to keep my toddlers still for a few seconds, bigger stools for seniors and teens.

(I’m making this quite a long ramble, and I apologize…but you know me!)

I’ve been on the lookout for a little chair for a long time – but everything I’ve found is painted. And I want wood. I LOVE wood grain because it’s so perfect for black and whites. And what is it with today’s furniture? Everything is so derned wobbly! Try getting a toddler to sit still on a wobbly chair. Ummm…no.

So today I wandered into a local antique store I hadn’t visited before. 5 minutes in and I find the perfect chair:

Chairweb

Beat up? Yes. Wood? Yes. Sturdy? Yes. Simple? Yes. Happiness reigns.

So then I wander around a little more, turned a corner, and a beam of light shot down from the sky to illuminate this:

Wagonweb

I do believe my hands came to my mouth to cover the <gasp> of glee and tears sprung from my eyes. As a former landscape photographer, in my eye this wagon was transported to an open space with woods behind…a newborn lying on it, nestled in a wool blanket…or one of my sitting babies…or a toddler in a dress with her legs hanging over the side.

There was no way that wagon wasn’t leaving with me.

Look at it in black and white:

It’s so beautiful it makes a perfect image all on its’ own, doesn’t it? The wheels, the rusted steel, the texture, the faded text.

I’m just a wee bit excited about incorporating this into some of my upcoming shoots. I have a newborn on Saturday, but sadly it’ll be too cold to be outside. But come April? Oh yeah…

Hey lookie!

I’m the featured photographer/blog today on “Blogs of Photogs:”

Blogsofphotogs

And boy does Mary nail me, eh? That I’m candid and chatty. And would sit with a glass of wine and have a lot to chat about.

Yup, that’s me!

My regular blog readers know that I post about a lot of things – I love posting client sessions, but since I like to talk, and talking to myself isn’t always viewed as “normal,” and when I talk to the 2 year old she usually asks me for a popsicle or tomatoes, I talk to my blog. Because I know you’re all out there (ahem – 290 avg. hits a day, so I think it’s time for y’all to say HI again, eh??).

So for those looking for session images – they’re all here – you just have to scroll through my daily blather (did I say blather?).

Thank you Mary for setting up the blog, and I’m so honored to be featured today!

More wall galleries!

You all know how much I love wall galleries…love designing them…love envisioning how my work will end up on someone’s wall for them to enjoy for years to come. I know the rooms in my home with galleries are the happiest rooms in my house.

Here’s one we designed yesterday for this wonderful family’s kitchen wall:

Kitchen_gallery_12x12sweb_2

For this one, we started out with a bunch of images (mom had a lot of favorites). After playing around with them a bit, we put in one of the b/w portraits in 12×12 with a 5.5″ frame. And that was it. I removed the rest, put up two more and it all clicked. I think galleries can fall into a few categories:

  • symmetrical (that will stay as-is)
  • simple and striking (like the one above – I love a grouping of 3 or 4 portraits and do them often)
  • asymmetrical (so they’re easy to add to)
  • striking (like the one above – a gallery that just pops you in the face when you see it)
  • warm and happy – which I love for family areas.

And here is an asymmetrical ‘warm and happy’ gallery we designed for their dining room. How beautiful are these kids??

We went with asymmetrical so it would be easy to add on – OR move this gallery to another wall at some point. The white line in the middle is a chair rail – I like to work on a palette that matches the wall almost exactly (measurements, color, trim, etc.).

And for over the fireplace? This image in a 20×30:

I think 20x30s are the perfect size for a fireplace mantel. I have a vertical one over mine, and this will be a horizontal. It’s big enough to stand on its’ own, but also leaves room to accessorize on either end.

I love working these up for my clients – I think it’s extremely helpful to “see” how your gallery will look (also makes hanging it a bit easier!).

Who knew a vegetable (that’s really a fruit) could cause such passion in a 2 year old?

Ava’s favorite food? Tomatoes. And she is *passionate* about them. Go figure.

I always know when it’s lunchtime because she storms in and demands “Matos!” with a little furrowed brow. “Matos! Matos!!” “Want Matos!”

Ok, honey, I get it. (and couldn’t she love something that isn’t $5/pound right now?!?). I tried to take a picture of her eating them at lunch – since what good is a post without pictures, eh – but by the time I pulled out my camera, she’d devoured them.

I do have to limit them, though – they don’t exactly agree with her delicate 2 year old skin on the <ahem> return trip.

Oh, and about that – potty training was a bust. I didn’t want to push it, since I think that can cause them to rebel. So we talked about the potty a lot for 1 whole day. And by day 2, if we asked if she wanted to go…”No!” So we’re backing off for now. Summer sounds like a good time.

And lest you think she’s not a ‘normal’ child, her 2nd favorite food?
“Pacle.” (pronounced pa-kul). What is that, you say? Popsicles. We have
to lock the fridge door or she’d be in there every 5 minutes getting
one.

What?

What’s that you say?

The contest ended yesterday?

By George, it did!

Let’s see who our winner is, shall we?

The winner…

drumroll please…

and some more…

and some more…(I do love a good drumroll…)

Sweet little ‘P:’

Congratulations, D & J! And thank you all so much for playing along, this was fun!

We are attempting potty training this weekend…

I have all the requisite supplies:

pink cotton training pants
elmo’s potty movie
a potty (duh)
a newly-purchased Little Green Machine (because…you know…accidents happen).

Wish us luck!
